Day 7 - 22 Sept: Yosemite National Park, CA

Jet lag, the van's bed and freezing cold made for a less than ideal night. The boys, in the rooftop tent, were fine because they had their onesies, a mattress and, after six days, minimal body clock problems. Ruth and I fared somewhat worse - definitely not adjusted to the time difference, and the 'bed' in the van is only OK, being in four sections and rather lumpy. The cold was the last straw, but it was only when we got up that we realised how cold...there was a heavy frost. We were at over 6,000 feet in an open campsite, so not surprising that it was chilly, but around about freezing? That wasn't expected.

Having twigged, from Tim's advice, that we needed to be very targetted in our approach to Yosemite, we set off into the park very early, and were progressively more and more stunned by the scenery. It's really difficult to put into words, so here are some pictures instead.

We made our way down into the valley and took in some of the historical and geological exhibitions, and walked to Lower Yosemite Falls. Wrong time of year though, as expected.

By now it was really hot - mid-20s in the shade but scorchio in the sun. After some lunch we drove up to Glacier Point...again, just wow.

Running out of daylight, we headed for camp. Although we had three nights booked at Silver Lake, Tim had made us realise we'd be better off spending the second night in the park rather than schlepping all the way out again, and we'd managed to find a site at Crane Flat.

Gorgeous campsite, perfect as our base for Yosemite mk 2 tomorrow.
